The Truth about Power Your Way

Understanding the PowerYourWay program

The energy rate that you pay is the sum of two components: supply and delivery.

ConEd purchases its electricity from several different energy suppliers (ESCOs). However, ConEd still delivers the power to your house (it owns the wires and infrastructure), reads your meter, and will continue to send you a bill for the service. Using the PowerYourWay program, you are telling ConEd which ESCO to purchase energy from. ConEd will then pass on to you the energy supply price for this ESCO (every ESCO charges different rates). ConEd will bill you for the delivery price, which is normally around 7 ¢/KWH (see Historical ConEd Electricity Prices chart below). For more information on how this works, go to http://www.poweryourway.com.

To understand the program, take a look at the sample bill on ConEd's web site. The sample bill includes electricity and gas, but we track only electricity on the web site.

The New York Times explains the new Con Ed bill here (August 2, 2008).

If you switch to another ESCO, ConEd will continue to mail you your entire bill. However, the Supply Cost and Sales Tax (4%) will appear on a separate page in your bill.

Component Sample bill rate Description
Supply charges 13.3457 ¢/KWH This is the rate charged by the ESCO to supply the energy to you. It varies by ESCO and by time of year, unless you are on a fixed-rate plan.
Basic service charge $11.04 This charge does not include usage and does not depend on the ESCO or the amount of energy supplied.  It varies slightly each month.
Delivery rate 5.4200 ¢/KWH This rate is charged by ConEd and can vary over time, but is usually around 7¢/KWH and is the same for all ESCOs.
SBC/RPS
0.2200
System Benefits Charge/Renewable Portfolio Standard fee does not depend on the ESCO.
Sales tax 4% This tax is applied to the entire bill (all components). However, if you switch to an ESCO, it is waived for the Delivery rate and Basic service charge, but you will still be charged sales tax on the supply rate of your bill.
Customer Charge
$0 - $4
This monthly charge appears only if you switch to another ESCO from ConEd, and so it does not appear on the sample bill.  It varies from $0 to $4 or more.  The "Customer Charge" for Energetix is $0.

PowerMove

PowerMove is a program offered by ConEd to encourage you to switch to an ESCO. This program is described on the HOME page.

The delivery cost is calculated as follows: Delivery cost = Cost + Adjust. Factor - Supply cost

The Delivery cost is fairly constant at around 6¢/kwh. However, it was as high as 10¢/kwh and as low as 1.5¢/kwh. The reason for this fluctuation is not known.

The Supply cost varies greatly. This is dependent on market conditions for the price of electricity.
